With 3 albums in the market and millions of copies
sold throughout the world, Morcheeba is enjoying the
fruits of success. Now they arrive in Barcelona with
their latest work, Charango, where they continue building
a style and personal sound, in the British tradition.
Elegance, romance, and melancholy for a music that
breaks down borders throughout the world with influences
from hip-hop to country, blues and Brazilian psychedelic.
Classical traditions for a very modern group.
The
Poble Espanyol is the stage for the concert of
the elegant ‘trip-hop’ group of the United
Kingdom, Morcheeba. But they are more than just a
trip-hop group.
Morcheeba
plays with music like they play with their own name
which is the sum of MOR (that signifies ‘easy
listening music’) and CHEEBA, the name of a type
of cannabis en argot. The result is a type of drug
with therapeutic effects, like their sensual and mystic
melodies.
The group is formed by the Godfrey brothers (Ross
y Paul) and his wife Shye Edwards, the jazz vocalist
that gives voice to the rhythms of Morcheeba.
In High School, the Godfrey brothers organized parties
where they mixed records of soul, blues and jazz. When
the exotic voice of Shye appeared, they knew they had
found what they had been looking for all along.
From love at first sound, have emerged 3 albums.
The first in 1996, ‘Who can you trust?’,
which signified the bombshell that put them in the
spotlight, thanks to the critics, in the trip hop
movement, at the side of Massive Attack and Portishead.
With 'Big calm' (1998) they found a special treatment
of jazz, with soul music and pop influences that resulted
in an album with touches of reggae and rap.
Their last work, Su 'Fragments of freedom', has an
air of pop, folk and psychedelic Brazilian beats over
the base of the British tradition loaded with the elegance
of soul, blues and jazz.
The
Poble Español is the stage for their next
concert the 22 of july. The event promises to be fun
with a kind of music that drinks from a multitude of
sounds and styles that captivates you as soon as you
hear the voice of Shye Edwards.
